Since it's veterans day I took time to think about how thankful I am for my freedom and for all the veterans and active duty military personnel that protect that freedom every day. I was looking at Google Trends today and noticed a national brand that took giving thanks to a new level.
The major restaurant chain Applebee's chose to honor veterans and active duty military men and women by offering them a free lunch. They offered up seven different choices for our service people totally free of charge with their military I.D. The dishes they offered ranged from salads and pasta to the more American steak and cheeseburgers!
Applebee's has been rewarded for their good deed by a volcanic hotness rating on Google Trends and an explosion of internet search traffic! According to Google Trends traffic absolutely exploded for search terms including Applebee's starting this morning and peaking right at lunch time.
The best part of this story is that two deserving organizations were rewarded for their good deeds. Applebee's was rewarded with fantastic branding while our brave veterans and service people were treated to a free lunch, the least they should be given.
Unfortunately this type of branding is overlooked more often than not. Brands shell out thousands, millions and even billions in advertising, promotions and publicity all too promote their name. Good will deeds are much less expensive, help a group in need, and garner great brand awareness and brand loyalty. So, next time you are tasked with building your brand think good not greed!
