Science Fiction Stories And The Elements Involved

By Ulmer A Westford

Within the world of entertainment and literature, there is going to be a wide range of different genres. Books, television shows, movies and many more often are thrown into a particular category depending on whether they are fiction or non-fiction. Science fiction stories are often lumped together with "fantasy" but they do tend to be a somewhat separate variety.

Many television programs which have a science fiction background tend to often have a very large following behind them and are considered to be quite influential upon modern culture. There are literally hundreds of different smaller categories that people can put these kinds of stories into.

A good science fiction story generally features scientific principles or technology which hasn't been proven yet. An example would be a story where artificially intelligent robots co-exist with humans. Of course many of these will take a somewhat dystopian turn, and set themselves in a world where humans and robots find themselves at war with one another.

Space opera is one element of this particular category which is very common and quite popular. Generally it will feature the likes of an interplanetary civilization, with impossibly fast space travel to other planets.

Science fantasy is often the name which is given to many stories of this nature. Whilst they will often contain a lot of principles and technologies that are scientific, they will also have somewhat mystical elements added to them, perhaps elements of magic, demons or other such entities as well.

"Hard" science fiction is another one of those sub categories which will take a more intellectual look at the world of speculative fiction with regards to not-as-of-yet invented technologies. Authors will normally do a good bit of research on the specific topic of their novel before writing anything down. They generally deal with themes that they consider to be theoretically possible and aren't as lax with the rules as is the previous category.

A lot of people think that this genre is just some peoples' way of trying to figure out what the future of the world might be like. Some of them paint a rather bleak picture, which is actually quite common, but many more predict things which are considered impossible. It is always good to bear in mind that a lot of modern technology was once thought to be impossible as well.
