The Immortals of Meluha - A Must Read Book

By Hitesh Patil

The Immortals of Meluha is a fiction book written by an Indian author called Amish Tripathi. The story and the plot are set in 1900 BC in the imaginary land of Meluha, a reference to the Indus Valley Civilization that existed around that time. With a spell-binding plot and the blending of history and mythology, Amish has managed to create one of the best-selling books ever written by an Indian author.

He takes us back in time to a land which is prosperous, wealthy and at ease with itself - the land of the Suryavanshis. This land is situated where now Modern Punjab stands and is a society that is as perfect as it can get and is based on the principles of Lord Rama's teachings.

However, there is a certain period of strife ongoing in Meluha due to the fact that they are on the verge of war with their enemies, the clan of the Suryavanshis who are situated in the East. These two societies cannot live together due to their different approaches to life. What is even further troubling to the Meluhan people is that their enemies have joined hands with the terrorist warrior tribe of the Nagas who now regularly raid the cities of Meluha.

The Immortals of Meluha picks up pace and introduces us to the character of Shiva, a nomadic warrior who is discovered by the Suryavanshis and brought to Meluha. It is then revealed that Shiva is the Neelkanth or the blue-throated god who will vanquish all evil from the land. This is the basic premise of the story and the question left for the readers is how Shiva rises to fulfill his destiny while battling the demons in his mind.

The book tries to recreate the feeling of "The Lord of the Rings" and takes us back in time. It is really creative as to how the author mixes both history and mythology together to create a riveting piece of work. Due to the countless references to the Hindu gods, ancient Indian History and the concept of good versus bad that Indians are brought up on, this book is sure to create a cult following of its own.

Amish Tripathi promises lots more with two sequels to come and they are bound to be as good as The Immortals of Meluha. The book has a great cover page and is marketed very creatively through the use of a trailer film. The Immortals of Meluha is a must read book for any fantasy fan and especially for Indians.
