Is The Wrecker actually worth reading?

By Erin Richards

You better believe it is! The Isaac Bell Journey series has to be the best series since Clive Cussler books branched out from the Dirk Pitt Stories. Set about 100 years previous, The Wrecker is an amazing journey story utilizing the best technologies of the time period...and it leaves the reader on the pins and needles and fully unable to put the book down!

Beginning with the villian, Cussler spins a superb story wth the elements of fear, elimination, and caution with the railroad industry at the turn of the century. Troubled by accidents and worker deaths, one railroad tycoon faces certain ruin at the hands of a maniac bent on the eradication of his railroad company. With the saboteur having eluded the policing of the railroad company, the businessman is made to call on outside, experienced help.

Thus, we see the entry of the Van Dorn Detective Agency with the premiere agent Isaac Bell in command of this case. A gentleman of means and high regard, Bell left his cushy life to be a private eye. Rugged, courageous, and definitely able to handle himself in a fight, the attributes of Isaac Bell draws you in and refuses to let you go. Determined to stop the growing threat to the railroads, Bell sets off to stop the maniac. This leads directly to high speed chases with some of the fastest steam engines of the era. Racing across the land, tracking a perilous opponent, accidents happening at every corner and turn...the complete makings for a great and exciting book to read next weekend.

So you are curious as to what is so wonderful about this book? Well, the constraints of the turn of the century are fantastic. We take travel and communications for granted now. We can hop on an airplane in Washington DC and be eating lunch in LA by 12 p.m.. If you feel like calling to get in contact with anyone grab your cell phone and make a call. Well, in this series, the quickest method of travel is through the railroad, and the best and quickest way of communicating is with the telegraph. The creator of this book pulls off a miracle of designing suspense and intrigue while remaining true to the time frame of years long since passed.

Clive Cussler has yet again succeeded in spinning a tale to keep his readers needing another book as fast as possible. I for one can't wait until the next Isaac Bell Adventure hits the bookstores.
