Sister of Silence is a compelling yet controversial book. It is now in use at universities for psychology courses and in psychologist's offices as a guide book to assist them in counseling patients undergoing recovery. The book recounts a woman's experience with childhood sex abuse and domestic violence.
The book retells the tale of a woman who overcame child abuse and violence to become a successful journalist. She was married at a very young age and endured a great deal in her teen years. Her book chronicles what she went through.
The author had to maintain her silence to protect herself and her children. Many other women are in analogous situations, hence the title of the book. Many of these women fear for their lives if they tell anybody about whats happening.
The book won first place in the West Virginia Writers' Competition. It was used at the University of Berkeley for helping families end domestic violence and on the Bob Edwards radio show. It has been quite inspiration for many people.
Not all people agree, however, that this book is a good thing. With every bit of progress, it seems like there are those who would like to impede this progress. A high school in Livermore removed the book from its shelves not sure of its affect on the students in the school. This is a sign, though, that may not want to hear this woman's message and the truth is too difficult to handle.
The author of Sister of Silence has since become a successful investigative journalist. The skills she learned from writing the book may have contributed to her abilities as a journalist. She has covered some tragic stories that she might be uniquely qualified to understand such as the murder suicide committed by Lashanda Armstrong. Armstrong was a victim of an abusive husband who felt she could not escape his abuse and she eventually took her own life and that of some of her children very tragically by driving into the Hudson River.
