Dealing with extreme stress can be an unusual landscape to navigate for many different reasons. The most important and influential thing to consider is the individual person. Response to severe trauma can be highly varied and unpredictable depending on the individual affected. While there is a lot of knowledge about the reactions, how they will show up in an individual is unknown. A couple of extremes of different reactions are when an individual shows immediate response and symptoms and then the individual that has a highly delayed reaction. Then again, there are people who hardly show any signs or adverse reactions to the same conditions. One could say it is a very diverse picture when dealing with extreme stress.
Any kind of disaster tends to be often sudden and usually overwhelming for people and resources to cope with it. Remember the undersea earthquake and tsunami that devastated northern Japan. That is a good example of thousands of people who were inflicted with extreme trauma and disaster. emotional injury and the variety of reactions to it would be extremely helpful, most people don't see the need to learn about it so are not prepared for it when it happens.
