Book Review - The Passage by Justin Cronin.

By Jessica Fisher

The Passage - Justin Cronin.

The Passage is a novel by Justin Cronin, published in 2010. It's the first novel of a planned trilogy; The Twelve (to be released in 2012) and The City of Mirrors (to be released in 2014).

At the time of reading I didn't know it was to be a trilogy, I had somehow missed the media hype about the book (i occasionally think I'm living in another world - but thats a story for another day) and had received it as a present. I'm a Stephen King fan and love to read so my partner thought it would be the best christmas gift for me. My primary thought about the book was it was BIG, very Big and at 750 pages it might possibly be the longest book that I have read. So after 1 or 2 months of reading the other books that i got for Christmas I ultimately got started.

The Passage begins in the 2018 and details an apocalyptical and, afterwards 90 years of a post-apocalyptic world with vampire-like beings that are infected by a pathogen. It tells the tale of humans who try to live in a world filled with vampire creatures who are continually on the hunt for fresh blood. The first thing I liked about this book is how Justin Cronin brings us back to the concept that vampires are malevolent, frightful creatures rather than the romanticised versions that appear to be coming more and popular in books, television and Film.

When I started the book I found it difficult to put down, it is intensely intense and tricky to take 5 from. It is an highly original story and the details of the story lines and the depth to the characters is fantastic. I'm so happy to have read this novel as I liked it massively!

I could go on for hours about the things i liked about this book but I will not, I would like to indicate that I was annoyed by the ending. I think that such a BIG fast moving book with such detail and depth merits a BIG satisfying ending - rather than an ending that just sets up the following book and fizzles out. But that isn't to assert that I am not already impatiently awaiting the follow up.
